It began on a full house
in Budapest.
On 23 February 2026, in the Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy, Balázs Fülei and Masanori Sugano played Bach and Mozart with the Budapest Strings, and gave the world premiere of a new work, Round. The hall was full. The concert was broadcast on Bartók Rádió.
This September the two sit down again — this time at a single piano, in Tokyo. Music born in Hungary, played by someone who carries the tradition forward.
Where does Bartók’s sound
come from?
Allegro Barbaro — three minutes of piano music with a violent title. Its ferocity is what usually stays with you. Under Fülei’s hands it turns into the memory of a village dance — the weight of feet on earth, held breath, and a sudden shaft of light.
Bartók, Kodály and Liszt all came out of the same Hungarian academy. Fülei is Head of the Chamber Music Department at the Liszt Academy in Budapest — standing in the middle of that lineage. Sixteen albums to date, and an international reputation built above all on Hungarian repertoire.

Kodály’s Dances of Marosszék — Transylvanian dance tunes turned into pure colour. The performance below is Fülei’s own, and the piece is on the programme for this recital. On 24 September the same sound will be in the air of the hall.
The piano you heard in
Your Lie in April.
The manga, anime and film Your Lie in April (『四月は君の嘘』) travelled far beyond Japan. Masanori Sugano was its music supervisor, and he is the pianist who actually recorded the pieces played by its hero, Kōsei Arima. The piano in the video below — Kreisler–Rachmaninoff’s Liebesleid — is his.
Sugano holds a doctorate from the Tokyo University of the Arts and studied at the Liszt Academy in Budapest during those years. He is Professor of Piano at Seitoku University. On 24 September, the Japanese pianist who trained in Budapest sits beside the Hungarian who teaches there.

One keyboard.
Four-hand playing puts two musicians shoulder to shoulder, sharing the same keys. When their breathing meets, a sound rises that neither of them could make alone. Half of this programme is four hands — Mozart, Schubert, Debussy, and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.

The performers
Balázs Fülei
FÜLEI BALÁZS — PIANO
One of Hungary’s leading pianists of his generation, active internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. He is Head of the Chamber Music Department at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and has released sixteen albums. His interpretations of Hungarian repertoire — Liszt, Bartók, Kodály — are especially highly regarded.
Masanori Sugano
SUGANO MASANORI — PIANO
Doctor of Musical Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, where he completed his undergraduate, master’s and doctoral studies; during that time he studied at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. Alongside concert work in Japan and abroad, he served as music supervisor for Your Lie in April, and since 2017 has been performing a complete Schumann & Mendelssohn series. Professor at the Faculty of Music, Seitoku University; lecturer at Musashino Academia Musicae.
